The Right Reverend Gary Robert Buchanan, composer, conductor, and educator, has served as music director of the International Community of Christ since 1979. An ordained minister of the Second Advent Church, he is also founding conductor of the Jamilian Handbell Choir and Sinfonietta, teacher at the Jamilian Parochial School, and faculty member of the Jamilian University of the Ordained.
        He has worked closely for over twenty years with Bishop Douglas Eugene Savoy in the study and composition of Second Advent music and liturgy. Dr. Buchanan's credentials include degrees, certificates and diplomas from numerous universities which he attended and where he taught: Brevard Music Center, North Carolina; N.C. Governor's School; N.C. School of the Arts; University of N.C.; Academia Chigiana, Sienna, Italy; J. Andrew Bowler Middle School, Richmond, Virginia; University of Washington, Seattle; and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane, Australia.
        Rev. Buchanan's compositions have been published and performed in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. His publishers include Galaxy Music Corp., New York; Fanfare Publications, Salt Lake City; and the Music Guild of the International Community Guilds Corporation, Reno, Nevada. During the last decade the composer has received numerous commissions: a Trumpet Concerto; a Violin Concerto; a Concerto for Flute, Violin and Orchestra; and a seven-movement work for Orator and Orchestra entitled "The Sagebrush Suite." The suite was commissioned by the Northern Nevada Concert Orchestra Association and premiered in Elko, Nevada, in April 1994. In 1997, the same group commissioned the "Mark Twain Suite" for Orator and Orchestra, and have requested a new work for Flute, Piano and Orchestra to premier in May, 2001. Other major works by Dr. Buchanan completed in recent years include "Snow White, the Opera" and the "Judaeo-Christian Trumpet Descanter," an ecumenical collection of 72 selections for choir, organ, and trumpet soloist.
